“Physical and anarchistic theatre that is engraved into one’s memory and continues to resonate long afterwards. Euripides Laskaridis is like a Greek interpreter of absurdist theatre, totally uninhibited and immensely charismatic.” DanceTabs, 2015
Creator and performer Euripides Laskaridis appears in the middle of a space seemingly organized in an arbitrary do-it-yourself manner, wearing a curvaceously padded body suit. Using simple objects and the play of light, Laskaridis creates a wild and humorous solo performance inspired by cabaret, slapstick and vaudeville.
This performance pushes the boundaries of the familiar. Out of the utterly banal Laskaridis creates a performative bubble in which colorful absurdity coincides with dark morbidity. His androgynous and grotesque character wanders around demonstrating positions, bursting into monologues of total gibberish or sensual poetry, bumping into walls, and dancing clumsily seemingly in search of meaning and connection to his surrealistic surroundings. This is a performative entity like no other – a hallowed relic from outer space. The performance premiered in 2015 and was selected to open the Aerowaves festival in Barcelona. It has since appeared at numerous festivals throughout the world.
Euripides Laskaridis, with a Master’s degree in Directing from the Brooklyn College in New York, began performing in 1995 in collaboration with many directors, among them Robert Wilson and Dimitris Papaioannou. In 2000, he began directing both theatrical pieces and short films. He explores the notions of transformation and irony in his works, and in 2016 was awarded the Pina Bausch Fellowship.
