When I Die - A Ghost Story with Music
“Thom Luz envelops his subject in a dreamlike-fantasy world. […] Luz’s theatrical creation is utterly original and unique, so much so that it cannot be attributed to any existing theatrical style or movement” Tages Woche, 2014
In 1970, an English woman by the name of Rosemary Brown discovered unknown works written by some of the greatest composers of all time, such as Bach, Liszt, Schubert, Chopin, Beethoven and Debussy. Brown, a widow and mother of two, reported that Liszt was the first composer to communicate with her from the grave asking her to help him complete an unfinished composition. Thus began a productive collaboration between Brown and several renowned deceased composers.
Based on the true story of Brown and the music of these long-dead composers, director and musician Thom Luz has created a performance skillfully combining musical, visual and theatrical elements. His musician-actors interlace the works discovered by Brown as if they were an ethereal message from beyond the grave. Luz’s delicate treatment of Brown’s longing for her departed husband is deeply moving. Poetically conjuring up her character, he raises several essentially unanswerable questions: can we communicate with the dead? Are those we have lost still present in our lives? Does reincarnation exist and how may we cope with loss?
Luz explores the field of musical theatre and examines how phenomena that have neither body nor form may find expression on the stage, by using musical and visual means to reveal dreams. Through his unique and hypnotic theatrical language, he creates a world in which things appear as if by magic.
Luz has been crowned by Theater Heute Magazine as the most promising director of 2014. His piece When I Die, gently moving along the boundary between this world and the next, is an opportunity to encounter Luz, one of the most promising rising stars of musical theatre.
*The performance will take place in English, French and German with Hebrew subtitles
